02 · THE TRADE

Where the price difference comes from.

Speechmatics prices as an enterprise speech vendor: Standard batch at $0.80 per hour and Enhanced at $1.04, with real-time higher again. Against those published tiers the gap is not marginal — it is five to eight times.

The honest caveat: Melia

Their newer multilingual model starts around $0.129 per hour, which is effectively level with our ASR-1 rate of $0.13. So the eye-catching numbers above compare against Standard and Enhanced, and if you are willing to run Melia the cost argument largely disappears at that tier. Our Whisper large-v3-turbo at $0.07 still comes in around half.

Deployment is the real dividing line

Speechmatics ships deployable containers. If you are on-premise for data-residency or air-gap reasons, no hosted API replaces that, and no per-hour rate should persuade you otherwise. Our Enterprise tier offers dedicated hosting and an EU data center, which covers some of those requirements but not the strict ones.

What you gain coming the other way

Open-weight models you can name per request, one composable pipeline where diarization, speaker identification, entities, sentiment and language-model processing run on the same job, and no minimum commitment to get published rates.

05 · FAQ

Questions people actually ask.

Q01

Is Ultrafield a good Speechmatics alternative?

On hosted API cost, comfortably — batch transcription is $0.07 to $0.13 per hour against $0.80 for Speechmatics Standard and $1.04 for Enhanced. The exception is their newer Melia model, which starts around $0.129 per hour and is level with our ASR-1 rate. If you run their on-premise container for data-residency reasons, we are not a like-for-like replacement.

Q02

How much cheaper is Ultrafield than Speechmatics?

Against their Standard tier, batch is about 84% less ($0.13 against $0.80) and real-time about 82% less ($0.19 against $1.04). Against Enhanced the gap is wider. Against Melia at roughly $0.129 per hour it is close to parity on ASR-1, though our Whisper large-v3-turbo at $0.07 is still around half.

Q03

Do both bill per second?

Yes. Speechmatics bills to the second and so do we, so the published per-hour rates compare directly without a rounding adjustment.

Q04

Can I self-host Ultrafield?

No. We are a hosted API. Speechmatics ships deployable containers, so if you have an air-gapped or strict data-residency requirement they solve a problem we currently do not. Enterprise customers can talk to us about dedicated hosting and an EU data center, which covers some but not all of those cases.

Q05

What about language coverage?

Speechmatics has invested heavily in breadth of language support and that is a genuine strength. Our coverage follows the model you select, with the Whisper family multilingual across a broad set. If a specific language is critical, test both on your own audio in that language rather than trusting either list.

Q06

When should I stay on Speechmatics?

If you need on-premise or container deployment, if you have an existing enterprise agreement and compliance posture built around them, or if your workload depends on a language where they measurably outperform. Their Melia pricing also removes cost as the deciding factor at that tier.
